Japan’s Kanta Tsuneyama defeated eighth seed Ng 22-20, 13-21, 21-19 in a thrilling first-round clash in Bali, which is hosting the Badminton World Federation World Tour Super 1000 event.

Denmark’s Rasmus Gemke also produced a superb performance as he came from a game down to upset seventh seed Lee 13-21, 25-23, 21-16.

The pair met in the first round for the second straight week after Lee was forced to pull out of last week’s Indonesia Masters opener after just 13 minutes due to injury.

"The first game was very difficult for me," said Gemke.

"I was struggling to play the conditions well, it was really slow in there.

"Lee made it difficult for me throughout.

"I played the four corners really well, his attack and his angles from the backline were difficult to see.

"I was always so far behind in the rallies.

"In the second game, I kept going, returning all the shuttles, trying to see if could get him to feel a little shaky.

"I found more confidence in doing that.

"I kept telling myself to keep pushing, keep the shuttles in the court. Lee seemed frustrated and he couldn’t play his game so I kept pushing him."

Recent Indonesia Masters winner, top seed and world champion Kento Momota of Japan continued his winning streak with a 23-21, 21-15 victory over India’s Lakshya Sen.

Momota will next face Loh Kean Yew of Singapore, who defeated Kashyap Parupalli of India 21-11, 21-14.

Fourth seed Chou Tien-chen Chou of Chinese Taipei eased through to the second round with a 21-12, 21-14 triumph against Lee Cheuk Yiu of Hong Kong.

He has set up a meeting with Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto, who downed France’s Thomas Rouxel 21-13, 21-13.

Shesar Hiren Rhustavito of Indonesia will take on Gemke after beating Sitthikom Thammasin of Thailand 21-12, 15-21, 21-16, while Hans-Kristian Solberg Vittinghus of Denmark saw off Kantaphon Wangcharoen of Thailand to secure a clash with Tsuneyama.

There were no surprises in the women’s draw as top seed Akane Yamaguchi of Japan swept to a 21-13, 21-10 victory over Ukraine’s Maria Ulitina.

She will next face Yeo Jia Min of Singapore who thumped Jordan Hart of Poland 21-9, 21-10.

Fifth seed Pornpawee Chochuwong of Thailand claimed a 21-12, 21-12 victory over Belgium’s Lianne Tan to move through to the second round where she will face Gregoria Mariska Tunjung of Indonesia, who beat Thailand’s Supanida Katethong 21-16. 21-15.

An Se-young of South Korea and Sayaka Takahashi of Japan, seeded fourth and eighth respectively, also advanced with straight-game wins.

The South Korean defeated Ruselli Hartawan of Indonesia 21-11, 21-8 and will now meet France’s Léonice Huet, who saw off Spain’s Clara Azurmendi 22-20, 21-10

Takahashi won an all-Japanese battle with Saena Kawakami 21-14, 21-14 to seal a second-round tie against Thailand’s Phittayaporn Chaiwan, who beat Yulia Yosephine Susanto of Indonesia 21-18, 21-19.

First-round action is due to continue tomorrow.
