Chilean youth athletes are set to benefit financially from a historic scholarship that will see all gold medallists at the Junior Pan American Games in Cali receive $1,000 (£749/€883) per month to prepare for the Santiago 2023 Pan American and Para Pan American Games.

The scheme, which is funded by the Chilean Ministry of Sport, has been introduced to enable the country's promising youngsters to commit to their sporting careers.

Gold medallists at Cali 2021 will automatically qualify for the event in Chile's capital.

Santiago 2023 President and Chile's Sports Minister Cecilia Pérez beamed with pride as she revealed the details.

"We also have really great news because in the Junior Pan American Games we have a fantastic scholarship system," Pérez told insidethegames.

"At Cali 2021, every medallist will receive a financial scholarship that will allow them to completely focus on Santiago 2023.

"It is a great step forward and will allow our representatives to solely focus for the Games.

"This is great news because in the past every scholarship was only for adult athletes and this is the first time that our junior representatives will be included.

"An adult Pan American gold medallist will currently receive approximately $5,000 (£3,747/€4,417) monthly.

"A junior gold medallist at Cali 2021 will receive $1,000 monthly.

"We are including them in the scheme so they can focus purely on what's important to them - sports."

Santiago 2023 is set to be the first major event held in Chile for 61 years.

"This will be the ultimate sporting event for Chile because the last big event we had was the 1962 FIFA World Cup," said Pérez.

"For us this is one of the most important sporting events in the history of Chile.

"It's also very important because in the last Pan American and Para Pan American Games we had a historic number of medallists in both Games.

"We are waiting for Santiago 2023 with a lot of hope because of our performance at Lima 2019."
