Malaysia and Sri Lanka have qualified for the men’s rugby sevens competition at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The two teams secured their places at the Games courtesy of their performances at the recent Asian Rugby Sevens Series in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

Malaysia ranked seventh out of eight teams in the tournament which was enough to book their ticket for Birmingham 2022.

They lost all three of their group matches before defeating the Philippines 28-19 in the seventh-eighth playoff clash.

Fahmy Jalil, vice-president of the Malaysian Rugby Union, said the squad would come together in January for a training camp in Bukit Jalil in preparation for the Games.

"A total of 20 players will be called to undergo training in Bukit Jalil under the guidance of coach Saizul Hafifi Md Noor," said Jalil.

Malaysia will be joined by Sri Lanka, who sealed their place at Birmingham 2022 after finishing sixth at the Asian Rugby Sevens Series in Dubai.

Like Malaysia, Sri Lanka lost all their group games but then beat the Philippines 29-28 to move through to the plate final where they suffered a 29-10 defeat to their hosts from the UAE.

Sri Lanka will be making their sixth appearance at the Commonwealth Games since rugby sevens made its debut at Kuala Lumpur 1998.

The rugby sevens competitions at Birmingham 2022 are scheduled to run from July 29 to 31 at the Coventry Stadium.
