Big names are missing from the women's competition, not far removed from Tokyo 2020, which concluded less than four months ago, but the biggest of them all is on the entry list.

That is Denmark's Olympic champion Anne-Marie Rindom, who upgraded from bronze at Rio 2016 to win her first Olympic gold medal in Tokyo.

She is in the running for World Sailor of the Year and could top off a successful 2021 by winning her third world title.

Agata Barwińska of Poland won the European title earlier this season in the Bulgarian city of Varna and will remain among the favourites with fellow medallists from the Championship, Dutch sailor Maxime Jonker and Vasiliea Karachaliou of Greece.

Jonker is the defending silver medallist from last year's event in Melbourne, having lost out for gold against team-mate Marit Bouwmeester.

Bouwmeester has to be considered Rindom's greatest challenger as the defending champion and the Olympic bronze medallist, with the 33-year-old the most consistent sailor at the Championship.

As well as winning four world titles, Bouwmeester has finished second on four occasions since 2010.

However, she did announce her pregnancy four weeks ago, with their being ambiguity over whether she is competing in Oman or not.

Belgium's Emma Plasschaert is the 2018 world champion and world number four, so will be expecting to be among the medals too.

Russian Yachting Federation's Daniil Krutskikh is the defending champion from last year and will look to win his second gold in a row in the men's laser radial event.

Michael Compton of Australia and Slovenian Nik Pletikos claimed silver and bronze medals.

Dutch sailor Paul Hameeteman is the 2020 European champion, while Poland's Filip Ciszkiewicz and Ukrainian Oskar Madonich are likely to feature near the top too.

Croatian Stipe Gaspic is the defending European title, with Madonich taking the 2021 silver medal and Umut Eyriparmak of Turkey taking the bronze.
