The Russian Tennis Federation (RTF) wrapped up the Davis Cup title after taking an unassailable lead over Croatia in the final in Madrid.

World number two Daniil Medvedev beat Marin Cilic 7-6, 6-2 to seal victory for the RTF at the Madrid Arena.

Andrey Rublev, the world number five, had earlier put the RTF 1-0 in front in the tie as he overcame Borna Gojo 6-4, 7-6.

The RTF's victory capped off a superb season for Medvedev, who won his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open.

The 25-year-old has also reached a career-high ranking and was part of the team that clinched the Association of Tennis Professionals Cup at the start of the season.

He went unbeaten throughout the tournament in the Spanish capital.

"It feels amazing but I am more happy for the team than for myself," said Medvedev.

"It is never easy to come at the end of the season but it was the best two weeks of my career."

The "neutral" RTF team competed under that banner as Russia's name, flag and anthem remain banned from major international events under World Anti-Doping Agency and Court of Arbitration for Sport sanctions imposed on the country.

The sanctions were imposed in response to the manipulation of Moscow Laboratory data and cover-up of a state-sponsored doping programme.

Russia had previously claimed the Davis Cup crown in 2002 and 2006.

The Davis Cup Finals began in November and were held across three locations - Madrid, Innsbruck and Turin - for the first time under a revamped format.

The Finals were delayed from 2020 until this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
