Japan's women team lost their first game of the World Curling Federation Olympic Qualification Event, falling to Scotland in the evening session today.

The Pyeongchang 2018 bronze medallists sat top of the standings after three wins from their first four matches, but they were defeated 8-5 by Scotland to drop to third in the standings.

The two teams that leapfrogged them were South Korea, who claimed silver at the 2018 Olympics, after beating that very Scotland 8-4 in the morning's session and Italy 7-1 in the evening, and Latvia, who beat Turkey 8-7 in the morning and the Czech Republic 9-6 in the evening.

Elsewhere, Germany, the Czech Republic and Italy all recorded their first wins of the tournament.

In the men's round robin, Norway continued their perfect start to the competition with four wins from four, defeating Germany 7-4.

"There are other good teams besides us, and we have yet to meet them," said Norway skip Steffen Walstad.

"It’s going to be a tough rest of the week.

"It was good to win there."

Denmark moved into third with a 9-2 hammering of Finland, while The Netherlands follow in fourth following a 7-4 win over the Czech Republic.

Japan won their second match of the tournament, squeezing past South Korea 6-5.

Competition continues with two men's sessions and one women's.
