The final of the Lucerne 2021 Haskins Innovation Challenge took place today, with students tasked with pitching innovative solutions to a range of problems.

The event kicked off with a short introduction from Swiss University Sports and the International University Sports Federation (FISU).

Then, the 10 best pre-selected teams presented their solutions, which focus on the legacy of Lucerne 2021.

The challenge "aims to reinvent the major sports event of tomorrow as part of the legacy of the Lucerne 2021 Winter Universiade," it is claimed, and it offers the "ideal platform to develop your ideas and introduce them to the world."

The three winning teams were Scooter, Champagne and Unicorn.

In the meantime, FISU Acting President Leonz Eder, FISU secretary general and chief executive Eric Saintrond and FISU Winter Games director Milan Augustin met with representatives of the Lucerne 2021 Organising Committee, local authorities and the Swiss National University Sports Federation at the house of Swiss University Sports in Lucerne to discuss the legacy of the Games.

The Games were cancelled due to tightened COVID-19 restrictions in Switzerland, which were then withdrawn, but FISU said that would not impact the Games' cancellation.

"After everything we have been through – not only in the last few weeks since the cancellation, but also since the beginning of our cooperation seven years ago –, it was important for us to take the time to meet the leadership of the Organising Committee and discuss our future collaborations as well as the implementation of the Lucerne 2021 Legacy programmes," said Eder.

"I am glad to see that the spirit of Swiss University Sports will live on stronger than before, despite the fact that the Lucerne 2021 Winter Universiade could not take place."
