Scotland's women's curling team have secured their place at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics after a comfortable win over Italy coupled with a shock defeat for Japan at the World Curling Federation Olympic Qualification Event in The Netherlands.

Entering the final session of the round-robin stage, Eve Muirhead's Scotland defeated Italy 8-1 to move to seven wins and two defeats.

Holding the tie-breaker over Japan thanks to an earlier head-to-head win, Turkey's surprise 8-5 victory against the Pyeongchang 2018 bronze medallists was enough for Scotland to jump into the top spot in the standings and book their place in Beijing.

Italy needed a win to claim a playoff spot.

Japan dropped to third in the standings behind Pyeongchang silver medallists South Korea, who beat the Czech Republic 12-6 today.

The pair both qualified for the playoffs, with the winner securing the second of three spots at the Winter Olympics.

The loser will then place fourth-place Latvia to determine the third team at the Olympics.

In the men's competition, the Czech Republic and Denmark secured their places in the playoffs alongside Italy.

Italy had already ensured they would be in the playoffs, but secured a second-place finish with a 9-4 win over Japan in the morning session.

In the evening session, the Czech Republic secured third place in the standings with a hard-fought win over Denmark.

The Czechs won 7-5, which means they will play Italy in the first playoff round.

The winner secures a spot at Beijing 2022, with the loser then playing Denmark for the third and final Winter Olympics place.
