Kenya’s women came from behind against Nigeria to triumph at the Africa Cup of Nations hockey in Accra, Ghana, reaching the semi-finals in the process, despite a troubled build-up and start to the tournament.

The opening match of the day in Pool B saw the Kenyans, who arrived late to the tournament and forfeited their opening game, secure a second win as they defeated Nigeria 2-1.

Benedicta Johnson had given Nigeria an early lead on 11 minutes, but five minutes later Aurelia Opondo levelled for Kenya.

With six minutes remaining Naomi Kemunto put Kenya ahead, meaning they won both group games after their delayed arrival, and set up a semi-final with a South Africa side who have looked in ominous form throughout the tournament.

Elsewhere in the pool, Ghana comfortably beat Zambia 4-0, with Vivian Narkuor netting twice for the hosts, who will now take on Zimbabwe in the last four.

In Pool A of the women’s competition, South Africa, who had already secured a semi-final berth before the match, routed Uganda 10-0, with Glasby Tarryn netting four times during the match.

Elsewhere in the pool, Zimbabwe drew 1-1 against Namibia, with Zimbabwe securing a semi-final berth on goal difference.

Zimbabwe took a 43rd minute lead through Tinodiwanashe Elijah before Namibia levelled eight minutes later through Taramarie Myburgh.

There were two men’s games in Pool B today, with Egypt beating Uganda 3-1 thanks to goals from Mostafa Ragab, Ziad Adel and Mohamed Nasr.

In the last game of a busy day in Accra, Nigeria and Ghana played out a 1-1 draw.

Peter John gave Nigeria a 43rd minute lead, before Francis Tettey levelled 13 minutes later for Ghana.

Both women’s semi-finals are scheduled to take place tomorrow, along with women’s and men’s classification matches.
