Hosts and 2016 winners West Indies failed to make the quarter-finals of the International Cricket Council's Under-19 Cricket World Cup, while defending champions Bangladesh progressed in second place from their group.

West Indies went into their final Group D match against Sri Lanka needing to win to keep their hopes of reaching the Super League alive, having lost to Australia and beaten Scotland in their opening two matches.

However, it was Sri Lanka who triumphed by three wickets at the Conaree Sports Club in Saint Kitts and Nevis' capital Basseterre to ensure they topped the group.

Australia finished second after beating West Indies and Scotland in their last group match, and losing by four wickets to Sri Lanka in their second game.

The Australians are due to face Group C winners Pakistan in the last eight of the Super League, although three of their players have returned positive polymerase chain reaction tests for COVID-19 and are currently self-isolating.

Afghanistan await Sri Lanka in the quarter-finals, after they clinched victory in their winner-takes-all Group C match against Zimbabwe at the Diego Martin Sporting Complex in Trinidad and Tobago.

Captain Suliman Safi scored 111 runs off 118 balls to help Afghanistan to a finishing total of 261-6, with Zimbabwe bowled out for 152 in reply.

Pakistan went through with victories against Zimbabwe, Afghanistan and Papua New Guinea.

Four-time Under-19 World Cup champions and 2020 runners-up India topped Group B, beating South Africa by 45 runs in their opener and easing past Ireland and Uganda.

South Africa also clinched comfortable wins in their last two matches to reach the last eight.

In Group A, England's seven wicket triumph over Bangladesh in their first match set them on their way to first place, and they followed it up with routine victories against Canada and the United Arab Emirates.

Bangladesh set up a quarter-final against India in what will be a repeat of the 2020 final as wins against Canada and the UAE saw them finish in second.

England are set to face South Africa in the first quarter-final at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua and Barbuda on Wednesday (January 26), with Sri Lanka playing Afghanistan at the Coolidge Cricket Ground on Thursday (January 27).

Pakistan are then due to play Australia on Friday (January 28), with India taking on Bangladesh on Saturday (January 29).

The Plate quarter-finals are all scheduled to be held tomorrow and Wednesday across three venues in Trinidad and Tobago.
