Marius Lindvik became Norway’s first large hill ski jumping champion at the Winter Olympics since 1964 after triumphing in the Zhangjiakou National Ski Jumping Centre.

The 23-year-old was placed second at the halfway point of the competition, achieving a score of 144.8 points for his first-round jump.

He trailed Japan’s Ryoyu Kobayashi, with the newly crowned normal hill champion scoring 147 points as he sought to clinch a second gold medal at Beijing 2022.

Lindvik set the standard for Kobayashi to beat by scoring 151.3 points in the second round, taking him to an overall score of 296.1

The effort could not be matched by Kobayashi, whose second jump was awarded 145.8 points to win the silver medal with a total of 292.8.

Lindvik was able to celebrate becoming the first Norwegian to win the Winter Olympic large hill event since Toralf Engan, who achieved the feat at Innsbruck 1964.

"It feels insane, I couldn't imagine it," said Lindvik.

"I knew if I had a good day I was going to fight for the medals.

"After the normal hill, I took a step back and reset and just looked forward to the big hill."

"After I landed, it was a lot of adrenaline and a lot of joy and after that it was a nervous moment when I had to watch Kobayashi jump," Lindvik added.

"I knew before that Kobayashi is really strong when he's in the first position after the first round, so I just had to go for it."

Germany’s Karl Geiger completed the podium places, with the bronze medal secured by a total of 281.3 points from the two rounds.

Geiger finished ahead of Poland’s Kamil Stoch, with the three-time Olympic gold medallist unable to add to his medal collection.

Stoch finished fourth on 277.2 points.
