Leerdam improved on her Olympic silver medal from last month to claim the world title in the sprint after finishing fastest in the women's 1,000 metres in 1min 14.96sec, finishing 0.37sec in front of Kok.

Vanessa Herzog of Austria was third, 1.11 off the pace of the winner and just five hundredths in front of American Kimi Goetz, who was fourth.

Kok did win the women's 500m in 37.93sec, 0.07 seconds in front of Poland's Andzelika Wójcik.

Bronze went to Herzog again, 0.05 behind the Pole and six hundredths in front of Leerdam.

Michelle de Jong made it three Dutch skaters in the top five.

Leerdam's victory in the 1,000m meant she edged out Kok for the overall sprint title by 0.07 points in the overall classification, with Herzog finishing third 1.08 points behind.

Thomas Krol claimed the men's overall sprint title, aided by a victory in the the men's 1,000m, crossing the line in 1:08.51.

He was 0.12 points in front of compatriot Kai Verbij in the standings, who finished third in the 1,000m behind Håvard Holmefjord Lorentzen of Norway.

Japan claimed a one-two in the men's 500m with Wataru Morishige recording a time of 34.77, 0.11 in front of Tatsuya Shinhama.

Shinhama's performance put him fourth in the sprint.

Laurent Dubreuil of Canada was the firm favourite to take the men's sprint title after a strong opening day yesterday, but was ruled out of the decisive races after testing positive for COVID-19.

Team sprint races are scheduled to take place tomorrow alongside distance competitions.
