English wildcard Joe Lee was one of the big winners on day one of the Optasia Championship in London, beating Cesar Salazar to reach the second round.

Lee, 38 places behind the Mexican in the world rankings, earned a convincing win at the Professional Squash Association (PSA) World Tour Gold event.

Lee was 11-7, 11-1 ahead when Salazar retired hurt.

"It was just a bit of a mental challenge as I knew he wasn’t moving as well as he usually does," Lee said.

"He still played pretty constructively in that first game.

"I managed to do enough and then found what I needed to do in the second.

"It would have been nice to have a go at him at 100 per cent, but I’ll take the win."

Peru's Diego Elías, the world number six, is next up for Lee at the Wimbledon Club.

This event was previously branded the Channel VAS Championship, and played at St George's Hill Lawn Tennis Club.

One-time world champion and two-time World Games medallist James Willstrop, as well as George Parker, join Lee as Englishmen to reach the second round.

Willstrop saw off the German Raphael Kandra in straight games, while Parker came from behind to beat Egypt's Karim El Hammamy in four games.

Egypt's Mohamed ElSherbini overcame American Shahjahan Khan, and his reward for the 11-9, 9-11, 11-5, 11-4 win is a meeting with world champion Ali Farag.

Malaysia's Eain Yow Ng, Swiss Nicolas Mueller, Egyptian Youssef Soliman and Saurav Ghosal from India also won through to round two.

Seeded players enter the fray tomorrow, with the all-Egyptian clash between Farag and ElSherbini perhaps the pick of the ties.

Willstrop faces another Egyptian, fourth seed Marwan ElShorbagy.
