Brazil’s Olympic medallists Abner Teixeira and Beatriz Ferreira triumphed on the opening day of the American Boxing Confederation Elite Men’s and Women’s Championships in Guayaquil in Ecuador.

Teixeira, who claimed bronze at last year’s Olympics in Tokyo, won the only men’s super-heavyweight preliminary round bout of the day, defeating Nigel Paul of Trinidad of Tobago.

Ferreira, a silver medallist at Tokyo 2020, overcame Fiolek Irene of Canada in the women’s lightweight category.

It was one of eight matches in the division contested today with Jonathan Bourget of Canada among the winners after beating Donnel Phillip of Trinidad and Tobago.

Moises Rodríguez of Panama triumphed against Juan Reyes Donis of Guatemala, Rafael Joubert Simon of Cuba defeated Peter Murray of Barbados and Jonathan Mansour of the United States claimed victory over Manuel Febus of Puerto Rico.

There were also victories for Colombian duo Jhon Elin Orobio Sinisterra and Camila Gabriela Camilo Bravo, while Alexy Miguel de la Cruz of Dominican Republic defeated Jose Andres Cardenas Carpio of Ecuador.


In the men’s bantamweight class, Erislan Romero Reyes of Colombia was the victor against Juan Sebastian Oliveros of Cuba, Caleb Josué Tirado Pagán of Puerto Rico overcame Josuel Hazael Barrera Martinex of Mexico, Luiz Oliveira of Brazil beat Alejandro Aldana of Guatemala and American Jahmal Harvey defeated Miguel Fernando Vega Barreras of Mexico.

Mirco Cuello Jehiel of Argentina, Jorge Moiran Vinent of Cuba and Jose Manuel Viafara Fori of Colombia, Samanta Valentina Valencia Lara of Ecuador, Valdes Pana Angie Paola of Colombia and Jajaira Gonzalez of US were winners in the men’s light welterweight category.

Colombia’s Ingrit Valencia, a bronze medallist at the Rio 2016 Olympics and Pan American champion, got off to a winning start in the women’s flyweight division, beating Micaela Robles of Argentina.

In the women’s welterweight category, Beatriz Soares of Brazil defeated Victoria Chiroy of Guatemala, Charlie Cavanagh of Canada beat Suzeth Ramirez Hernandez of Mexico, Lucia Noelia Perez of Argentina got the better of Velka Velez of Ecuador and Stephanie Pineiro Aquino of Puerto Rico emerged victorious from her bout with American Arika Skoog.

Pan American bronze medallist Maria Moronta Hernandez of Dominican Republic beat Morelle McCane of the US in the only women’s light middleweight contest.
