A special conference looking ahead to the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Brisbane is being organised by Disability Sports Australia (DSA).

The event is due to take place between June 15 and 17 and has been given the theme "Runway to Brisbane 2032: Maximising collaborative participation for people with disabilities in sport on the pathway to Brisbane 2032”.

The conference is set to be the headline event of the Sunshine Coast Sports Symposium and the inaugural National Disability Sports Conference.

The main topic of the conference will be how to use Brisbane 2032 to help get Australians with a disability more active, more often.

The conference will bring together leaders in sport, disability, education, allied health, Government and community to discuss the importance of collaboration in breaking down the barriers to sport and physical activity participations of Australians with disabilities, it is promised.

Key-note speakers at the Conference will include double Olympic swimming gold medallist Kieran Perkins, the new chief executive of the Australian Sports Commission, and new Brisbane 2032 Board member and International Paralympic Committee vice-president Robyn Smith.

Events planned include a celebrity wheelchair rugby game in partnership with Wheelchair Rugby Australia and a Variety Activate Inclusion school sports day.

The DSA National Conference is due to be held on the second day of the Conference and is set to be preceded by a breakfast with Queensland sporting organisations and local community clubs.

The DSA National Conference is expected to feature current and former Paralympic greats, including Australia's Beijing 2022 co-captain Melissa Perrine, nine-time athletics gold medallist Louise Sauvage and Katie Kelly, winner of a triathlon gold at Rio 2016, among others.

Queensland’s Sunshine Coast has established itself as an important sports hub having signed partnerships with national rugby league club Melbourne Storm, two-time Suncorp Super Netball Premiership champions Sunshine Coast Lightning, and the Australian Cycling Academy.

In addition, innovative sports research, technology, and facilities are available at the University of Sunshine Coast.

Sunshine Coast Council community portfolio councillor David Law claimed the Sunshine Coast was one of Australia’s premier sporting destinations and was committed to improving facilities for the disabled in the build-up to Brisbane 2032.

"Our Council continues to demonstrate commitment to accessibility through improvements to public spaces and places and providing accessible amenities, beach-accessible equipment and matting," he said.

"Our Sunshine Coast Community Strategy 2019-2041 provides a long-term framework, guiding how Council and our community will work together to roll out our action plan for accessible community health and wellbeing programmes and sporting activities.

"Hosting the DSA National Conference will be a real opportunity to connect and create conversations to influence all levels of Government, and enhance our council’s ongoing plans to enable more people with a disability to be more active, more often, across our beautiful region."
