The third edition of the South American Youth Games is set to start in one of the largest cities in Argentina and is expected to feature more than 2,000 competitors between the ages of 14 and 18, including new names Virgínia Fortes Águas and Giovana Moreira representing Brazil in skateboarding. 

Águas participated in the entire qualifying race for the Tokyo Olympics and has recently secured first place in the Pro Skate League in Portugal.

Apart from them, swimmers Stephanie Balduccini and Stephan Steverink, table tennis player Giulia Takahashi and gymnast Andreza Lima are also some of the main names from the country. 

Balduccini has emerged as one of the sport's main talents after winning seven gold medals at the Junior Pan American Games in Cali. 

The 17-year-old has also qualified for the World Cup in Budapest, which is set to take place in June this year. 

The South American Youth Games is scheduled to be held in Rosario, about 280 kilometres from Buenos Aires, until May 8 and will open the calendar of sports mega-events in South America. 


Day one is due to feature competition in taekwondo, tennis, table tennis, archery, beach volleyball and swimming. 

Saturday (April 30) is due to stage the highest number of competitions with twelve disciplines scheduled at Parque Único Suramericano.  

After their first two editions, held in Peru's capital Lima in 2013 and in Santiago in Chile in 2017, the Games were originally scheduled to take place in 2021 but got postponed due to COVID-19. 

Athletes from 15 different countries are due to compete in 26 disciplines, with the South American Youth Games designed to offer young athletes an international experience in a large multi-sport event. 

The vast majority of them featured in the Olympic programme.
