The South African, who has won women's singles bronze at the last two editions of the Games as well as a pairs gold at Glasgow 2014, suffered defeat yesterday in Group 5 to put her prospects of a top two finish at risk.

Ireland’s Sandra Bailie maintained her perfect start at the Bristol Indoor Bowling Club by winning her third consecutive match, taking her through as the Group 1 winner.

Namibia’s Marietjie Van Den Bergh advanced in second place.

Wales’ Amy Williams and Kerry Packwood won all three of their matches in Group 2 and 3 respectively, with the pair joined in the next phase by Jersey’s Megan Kivlin and England’s Devon Cooper.

England’s Ruby Hall and the Netherlands’ Saskia Schaft won two and lost one of their Group 4 matches to advance, while Scotland’s Claire Anderson and Ireland’s Lara Reaney earned the top two positions in Group 6.

Group 7 saw Malaysia’s Nurual Alyani Jamal and Scotland’s Julie Forrest progress, with the last 16 completed by Group 8 qualifiers Anne Nunes of the United States and Alison Merrien, representing the International Indoor Bowls Council (IIBC).

Scotland's Stewart Anderson, a five-time world indoor champion, ensured he ended the group stage of the gents singles with a 100 per cent record following a third win.

Anderson, competing under the IIBC banner, beat Botswana’s Remmy Kebapetse 11-4, 8-3 today.

Hong Kong’s Arthur Lam earned second place in Group 1.

Anderson was one of eight players to win all three group matches, including Guernsey’s Ian Merrien in Group 2, Wales’ Robert Chisholm in Group 3, South Africa’s Jason Evans in Group 4, England’s David Bolt in Group 5 and World Bowls’ Gary Kelly in Group 6.

England’s Andrew Walters in Group 7 and Canada’s Hirenda Bhartu in Group 8 were also perfect in group matches.

Thailand’s Wattana Kadkhunthod, the Isle of Man’s Mark McGreal, Singapore’s Zoher Motiwalla and Scotland’s Mike Stepney were runners-up in their respective groups to progress to the knockout stage.

Malaysia’s Mohammed Faitius Jabel, Israel’s Selwyn Hare and Ireland’s Andrew Duncan will also compete in the last 16.
