Olympic silver medallist Blessing Oborududu will seek a 11th consecutive title when the African Wrestling Championships begin at El Jadida in Morocco.

Oborududu earned one of Nigeria’s two medals at the delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games last year, ending as the runner-up to the United States’ Tamyra Mensah-Stock in the women’s under-68 kilograms final.

The 33-year-old has been the dominant force at continental level, with 10 gold medals at the African Championships since her maiden title in 2010.

World Championship silver medallist Odunayo Adekuoroye will feature in the women’s 59kg competition, as she seeks a sixth continental crown.

The Nigerian wrestler is competing for the first time since missing out on a medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Adekuoroye will hope to top the podium in the build-up to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, where she will seek a third consecutive title.

Nigeria were the second-best team when the African Championships were last held in 2020 in Algeirs, winning seven gold medals in senior competitions.

Sixth of Nigeria’s gold medals came in women’s freestyle competitions.

Algeria led the medals table with nine golds, while Egypt and Tunisia both finished the event with six titles.

Abdelhak Kherbache earned his second successive title in the men’s 57kg freestyle event in 2020, but will now seek to win gold in heavier 61kg weight division.

Gabon’s Diamantino Iuna Fafé could benefit from Kherbache’s absence in the 57kg division, after winning silver two years ago.

Fateh Benferdjallah and Abderrahmane Benacha will be among the Algerian wrestlers seeking success at the event.

Competition will be held at the Salle Idriss Chakiri.
