El Tayeb, who reached the semi-finals of the Professional Squash Association (PSA) World Championships last week, is appearing at the ongoing tournament for the first time since 2019 and was competing against Mohamed for the first time in over two years.

The 29-year-old hit her attacking targets well in the women's draw and, despite a third game blip, she held firm to secure an 11-3, 11-8, 7-11, 11-5 win.

The result set up a second-round encounter with number eight seed Rowan Elaraby, also of Egypt.

"Mentally, I was trying to prepare myself for a non-structured kind of game because she [Mohamed] doesn't play with structure," El Tayeb said.

"Sometimes when she gets in a round of points, it's not easy to get back into the game and play my game.

"At the moment, she is not playing at her best, there were a few errors here and there and that played an important role, as in the second and third at times I was under a lot of pressure."

On court one, Belgium's Tinne Gilis got her tournament off to a winning start as she dispatched Hong Kong's Chan Sin Yuk in straight games 11-7, 11-6, 11-9, meaning she is due to meet American number four seed Amanda Sobhy for a place in the last 16.

"I’m very happy to beat her [Chan] in three today because I played her a few months ago in Washington, that was the first time I’d ever seen or heard of her, and I just won that match in five," said Gilis.

In the men's tournament Spanish veteran Borja Golan fought to a gruelling 3-2 win over world number 29 Karim El Hammamy of Egypt to set up a clash with experienced Colombian Miguel Rodriguez in the last 32.

Golan prevailed 11-6, 11-7, 9-11, 11-3 after a mammoth 82-minute duel.

"I don’t think El Hammamy has had very good tournaments in the last few weeks, but I could see he wanted to win today," said Golan.

"He’s a very fast player and very tricky, I had to play my best.

"I’m an experienced player now, but I’m missing other things like the speed."

Mexico’s Cesar Salazar will join Golan in the second round after he beat Egypt’s Yahya Elnawasany in a similarly brutal five-game battle, while men’s England number one Patrick Rooney is also through after dispatching Ivan Yuen of Malaysia in straight games.
