Men’s world number one Paul Coll of New Zealand battled from a game down to reach the quarter-finals of squash’s El Gouna International.

The top seed looked out of sorts initially against his opponent Nicolas Mueller, with the Swiss player’s consistent game proving problematic, before Coll recovered to complete a 10-12, 11-5, 11-9, 11-9 triumph in just over an hour.

Coll will face sixth seed Tarek Momen in the last eight, after the Egyptian completed a comprehensive 11-4, 11-7, 11-1 win over French wildcard Aly Abou Eleinen.

Defending champion Mohamed ElShorbagy of Egypt also advanced, although he was pushed hard by Spanish veteran Borja Golan, winning 11-7, 11-7, 11-6.

ElShorbagy will face compatriot Fares Dessouky in the quarter-finals, after the eighth seed overcame Baptiste Masotti of France in four games 9-11, 11-4, 11-3, 11-9.

In the day’s other women’s matches, world number 28 Nour El Tayeb of Egypt reached the last eight with a hard-fought 14-12, 11-3, 6-11, 11-9 win over England's Georgina Kennedy.

El Tayeb’s next opponent will be Tinne Gilis, the Belgian who yesterday knocked out fourth seed Amanda Sobhy of the United States.

Gilis impressed in a straight games triumph against Nada Abbas of Egypt, winning 12-10, 11-6, 11-4.

The bottom halves of the men’s and women’s third round are due to be completed tomorrow, with matches set to be held at both the El Gouna Squash Complex and the El Gouna Conference and Cultural Center.
