The International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS) Wheelchair Fencing has created a new online platform to allow people to learn about the sport through an education programme.

This platform can be accessed for free and is open to all via the online learning section of the IWAS Wheelchair Fencing website.

There are six modules to work through, beginning with the history of wheelchair fencing and how it is organised today before delving into the intricacies of the sport.

Differences with non-disabled fencing and information about épée, foil and sabre are also covered.

Classification, the basic rules and the equipment used are also mentioned, with the course finishing with links to other resources.

Other free information on the IWAS Wheelchair Fencing website includes video tutorials on building a fencing frame as well as information for coaches and referees.

It is currently published in English and is to be followed by a Spanish version.

It was made by IWAS Wheelchair Fencing and its development officer Alberto Cruz with funding from the International Paralympic Committee.

IWAS Wheelchair Fencing also launched an academy recently that gathered athletes, coaches and referees in São Paulo last year.
