France claimed both the men's épée and women's foil gold medals today at the Fencing World Championships, in Cairo in Egypt.

Romain Cannone, the top seed in the men's épée, prevailed as expected to claim the title.

In the quarter-finals, he won 15-13 against Ruslan Kurbanov, the ninth seed from Kazakhstan; and he went on to make the final by defeating Belgian 44th seed Neisser Loyola 15-14.

There, he met Japanese 31st seed Kazuyasu Minobe, who made it into the semi-finals with a 12-11 win over 10th seed compatriot Koki Kano.

Minobe then won 13-12 against sixth seed Igor Reizlin of Ukraine in the final four.

Olympic champion Cannone claimed gold by beating the Japanese fencer 15-12.

Tenth seed Ysaora Thibus made it another title for France in the women's foil.

Her road to the final picked up momentum when she won 15-8 against Canadian seventh seed Jessica Zi Jia Guo in the last 16; and made the final four with a 15-11 victory over Japanese 15th seed Sera Azuma.

Romanian 51st seed Maria Boldor was the next victim, losing 15-3.

Meeting her in the final was Italian fourth seed Arianna Errigo, who thrashed 12th seed compatriot Francesca Palumbo 15-3 in the quarter-finals, before beating American top seed Lee Kiefer 15-14.

Thibus defeated Errigo 15-10 in the final to seal the gold.
