Both deciding matches were played at the Estadio Santa Laura in Santiago, with Japan turning in an impressive performance in the women's final to beat European champions Poland 17-0.

Sakura Sevens forward Chiharu Nakamura, who scored her side's opening try against Poland, said after the final whistle: "Finally, we've done it!

"It's been a really long time."

A sustained period of Polish pressure followed Nakamura's try before a stunning break from Mei Otani led to a try for Yume Hirano on the stroke of half time.

Michiyo Suda then capped off the shutout victory with the final score to clinch the title.

In the men's final, Georgia paid the price for indiscipline a the first half which saw them receive two yellow cards.

Uruguay scored two of their tries in the opening period courtesy of Felipe Etcheverry Cavanna and Bautista Basso.

Basso was then sent to the sin bin to allow Georgia a way back into the contest as Giorgi Tchuadze touched down within a minute of the second half.

Valentin Grille Dotti secured the win though when he scored late on to make it 19-5.

Uruguay only made it out of the group stage as one of the best third-placed finishers but still managed to qualify for the Sevens Series for the first time in their history.

Japan are due to join Australia, Brazil, Canada, Fiji, France, Britain, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Spain and the United States on the 2022-2023 women's circuit.

It is scheduled to run from December 2 2022 to May 14 2023.

The men's Sevens Series lasts longer, from November 4 this year to May 21, and will feature all the countries playing in the women's event except for Brazil.

Teams from Argentina, Kenya, Samoa, South Africa and newly-promoted Uruguay will also appear.
