The Papua New Guinea Pacific Games Association (PNGPGA) has appointed Faye-Zina Lalo Chef de Mission for the 2023 Pacific Games.

Lalo, who is a lawyer by profession, is the legal advisor to the Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee (PNGOC) Board.

The PNGOC acts as the PNGPGA when it comes to the Pacific Games, the next edition of which is due to take place on the Solomon Islands next year.

Lalo also sits on the Australian Football League (AFL) Development PNG Board, helping to form talent pathways which can lead to professional Aussie rules careers and promote the AFL code to junior athletes.

"Team PNG has a strong reputation at the Pacific Games, and my team and I will be working hard to ensure our athletes and officials have everything they need to realise their potential over the next few months," Lalo said.

"The nucleus of our Team PNG contingent have had a successful year winning the games at the 2022 Northern Marianas Pacific Mini Games in July this year, and with the added benefit of the 2022 Commonwealth Games experience we are building firmly for Solomons."

This will be Lalo's first Pacific Games as Chef de Mission.

Emma Waiwai served in the role for the 2019 edition in Samoa.

Lalo is expected to attend an update meeting in November in Pacific Games host city Honiara, before building a management team, setting targets and working with the relevant National Federations.

PNGPGA President Sir John Dawanincura expressed trust in Lalo's capability to succeed Waiwai.

"We have every confidence in her leadership and ability to replicate the existing structures and culture that has enabled Team PNG to excel over the years," Sir John said.

Papua New Guinea is expected to send more than 400 athletes and officials to the Pacific Games.

The multi-sport event is scheduled to take place between November 19 and December 2.
