Quadruple Paralympic champion Veronika Vadovičová set a world record on her way to securing the first gold medal of the Para Shooting World Championships in Al Ain.

The Slovakian amassed 255.2 points in the final as she went head-to-head with Tokyo 2020 gold medallist Natascha Hiltrop of Britain to decide the mixed 10 metres air rifle prone SH1 category.

The pair went into the final round with Vadovičová holding a 0.9-point advantage before she shot 10.7 on both of her last attempts.

It meant that she beat her own record from 2018 by 0.2 points while Hiltrop finished on 253.9, with a 10.7 and 10.3 in the closing stages.

Israel's Yuliya Chernoy made up the top three with a score of 230.8 to clinch the bronze medal.

None of the podium finishers scored below 10.0 points in any of their attempts.

Vadovičová's title adds to her Paralympic Games triumphs.

The 39-year-old won gold at Beijing 2008 and Rio 2016 in the 10m air rifle standing SH1.

In Brazil, she also took the mixed 10m air rifle prone SH1 title before a mixed R6 50m rifle prone SH1 victory at Tokyo 2020.

Competition is set to continue tomorrow with medallists due to be decided in the VIS 10m air rifle VI standing and mixed 25m pistol SH1 tournaments.
