Kyrgyzstan’s heavyweight Sambo wrestler Bekbolot Toktogonov has admitted he found it hard to come to terms with winning a gold medal at the the International Sambo Federation (FIAS) World Championships on home soil a special emotion

He had defeated Mongolia’s Purevdorj Damdinsuren in the over-98 kilograms final 3-1 to claim gold in front of an exultant home crowd at the Sports Complex Gazprom for Children in Bishkek last month.

"The final turned out to be the most difficult, he turned out to be a very serious opponent." Toktogonov said after defeating Damdinsuren.

Toktogonov had been in control for most of the contest but faced an anxious wait for a review at the end of the bout before being awarded the decisive point.

"It is impossible to convey my emotions," Toktogonov said,

"We first met him on the mat 10 years ago, and then I lost, but I managed to take revenge.

"I am incredibly happy that I managed to win a gold medal for my country,and to win the gold medal at home is a great pride and honour for me."

Toktogonov had received a bye in the first round and opened his campaign against 2019 European Games silver medallist Viktor Reshko of Latvia in the round of 16.

"The first fight is always difficult as it requires a warm up and getting into the rhythm of the competition," Toktogonov said.

“"Added to that is that that Viktor is an experienced and titled athlete,"

In the quarter finals Toktogonov had defeated another Minsk 2019 medallist, Serbia’s Vladimir Gajić, a European Games bronze medallist.

A further victory over Turkmenistan’s Batyr Hojamuhammedov took Toktogonov to the final.

In the meantime, combat sambo gold at 79 kilos for Daiyrbek Karyiaev ensured the crowd’s momentum was maintained by the time Toktogonov entered the mat for his moment of destiny.

"The support of the fans was felt during all the fights." Toktogonov said.

“This is one of the best days in my life, because today I managed to bring a medal to the piggy bank of my country.” Toktogonov admitted. 

"The path to this victory was long and difficult, and to be honest, I was tired, but incredibly happy.

"The fact that, thanks to me, the anthem of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan will be played in my home arena fills me with incredible emotions."

Toktogonov, who will finish the year as top of the rankings in his discipline, is now expected to defend his title in 2023.

The 2023 World Championships were awarded in October to Egypt and are due to take place between November 10 and 12.
