All of these World Cups are to feature riding as an event, with Paris the last Games to feature it as a discipline before it is replaced by obstacle racing.

This change means modern pentathlon's spot at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics is not yet confirmed.

Cairo is to open the World Cup season from March 7 to 12, followed by Ankara from April 11 to 16 and Budapest from April 25 to 30.

Sofia is scheduled next from May 9 to 14, before the World Cup returns to Ankara for the finale.

The 72 best athletes are to compete in Turkey at the UIPM Pentathlon World Cup final from May 31 to June 4.

It is to follow a similar format to modern pentathlon at Paris 2024, which is to become a 90-minute event.

"One month ago we had a historic UIPM Congress where our global community voted for change," said UIPM President Klaus Schormann. 

"I assure our senior pentathletes that nothing will compromise their road to qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in the next two seasons, and everything will be done to make sure the competition in Versailles is a true showcase of our sport."

Tokyo 2020 men's champion Joe Choong from Britain is among those opposed to the changes in the sport and continues to support riding despite its exclusion.

The 2023 season calendar also features dates for the Africa and Oceania Championships, Pentathlon Junior World Championships and the Pentathlon and Laser Run Championships.

The Pentathlon and Laser Run Championships are scheduled to take place in Bath from August 19 to 28, with the Africa and Oceania Championships following in Cairo from September 6 to 11.

A week later, the Pentathlon Junior World Championships are scheduled from September 12 to 17 in Druskininkai in Lithuania.

Also taking place in 2023 are the European Games in Krakow, the Asian Games in Hangzhou and Pan American Games in Santiago, all featuring the sport.
