The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) fired a warning to equipment manufacturer Van Deer-Red Bull Sports after the company wanted its athletes to use a ski with their logo at the Alpine Ski World Cup in Schladming.

The International Federation claimed that Van Deer-Red Bull Sports were informed previously that their logo does not comply with FIS regulations.

But the company requested the governing body to use their logos in Schladming before it was denied again.

According to FIS regulations Article 2.1, any identification of a manufacturer or of a sponsor on clothing and equipment must be in conformity with the FIS rules "Specification for competition equipment" and "Specifications for commercial markings".

"Companies which are typically not engaged in equipment manufacturing but produce certain equipment items mainly for the purpose of advertising shall not be allowed to benefit from the Manufacturer’s Identification privilege," reads Article 1.3 of the FIS.

FIS said that the use of any such logos would lead to sanctions including withdrawal of FIS license.

The governing body, however, confirmed that no breach of rules took place in Schladming and added that there can be no "special treatment" for any ski manufacturer.

"The rules on Manufacturer's Identification have been in place for many years," an FIS statement read.

"They apply to competitors, officials, personnel providing services as well as to any other person within the competition area.

"FIS is particularly keen to ensure that athletes who have been training for years are not drawn into such disputes.

"FIS asks for compliance with the clearly-stated rules, and respect for all other athletes, teams and manufacturers."

Loic Meillard of Switzerland won the giant slalom gold medal at the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup in Schladming yesterday.

Meillard's compatriot Gino Caviezel bagged silver while bronze went to Austrian Marco Schwarz.
