Shiffrin was leading after the first run with a time of 44.66sec but she her 14th-placed finish on run two left her second overall on 1min 30.97sec.

Duerr's consistency prevailed as she finished second again in run two to post a total time of 1:30.91.

Zrinka Ljutic of Croatia made up the podium as she clocked in after 1:31.40 to bag bronze.

Had Shiffrin secured gold, she would have equalled Jan Ingemar Stenmark's record of 86 World Cup victories.

It is the eighth podium for Duerr but first win in a traditional discipline as she finally breaks though to top a podium.

"It took me a while (to win a classic World Cup race)," said Duerr.

"I just tried to risk it all.

"I had a little mistake in the flat and I just thought to go all in.

"So yeah, it is crazy that it happened today.

"It just feels special to win a World Cup race.

"This is the most special thing for me today that I am on top.

"I did not imagine this would be the case today, but sometimes you have to even surprise yourself."

Shiffrin went into the race in fine form but fell short of her fourth win in a row by just 0.06.

"The last months have been nonstop," said Shiffrin.

"There have been so many amazing races, I do not expect to win every one.

"I didn’t expect to win ten already this season.

"So after yesterday and the first run today felt amazing.

"The second run maybe I didn’t risk enough to earn the win but to get second and on the podium and secure the slalom globe are amazing for me."

The World Cup circuit will now take a break until February 25 as the Alpine World Ski Championships take place from February 6 to 18.
