World number one Gulyas took control of the women's event as she overturned the lead of Frenchwoman Elodie Clouvel to take a five-point victory with a total score of 1,403.

Home favourite Salma Abdelmaksoud made up the top three with 1,392 points across the four disciplines of riding, fencing, swimming, and laser run.

"My technical disciplines were very good - fencing and shooting were really amazing, I couldn't have wished for better," Gulyas said.

"My physical disciplines not so good, but it was okay because I could compensate with my technical disciplines.

"I have a very good mental coach, and my coaching team is also very good at helping in my preparation for competitions.

"The main competition is still further away this year, but hopefully I can keep this up."

The men's event saw Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medallist Elgendy start the laser run nearly 30 seconds off the lead but kept faith in his tactics and prevailed by a margin of exactly five seconds.

The narrow race victory meant that he amassed a total of 1,516 points to pip Hungarian Csaba Bohm to gold by two points.

Martin Vlach of the Czech Republic rounded out the podium with 1,511 points to his name in a tight finish.

"First I'm very happy to get this medal in my home country and in front of this crowd and my family, friends and all my coaches.

"Also I'm happy to be back on the podium a year and a half after the Olympics, because of injury.

"Today I'm so happy and so grateful to be back.

"Four years ago I won the gold medal here in Egypt, in my first senior World Cup in 2019, and I'm so happy to get my second gold medal here today."

The Pentathlon World Cup is scheduled to conclude tomorrow with the mixed relay event.
