Compatriot Marco Odermatt also closed in on the all-time men's season points record with victory on the Aliga course in the Andorran resort.

Last season's super-G winner Brignone was one of the first contenders out of the gate, and a superb time of 1min 26.92sec put her in with a strong chance of success.

However, Gut-Behrami timed her second super-G win of the season to perfection, clocking 1:26.70 to take the lead.

She was thrilled with her overall victory in the discipline afterwards, which came by a margin of 45 points over Brignone.

"I am really happy the way I skied, it was finally the way I wanted to ski," Gut-Behrami said.

"I felt free and fast.

"It’s really nice to end the season like that, to win a super-G to win the Globe.

"It was intense."

Ragnhild Mowinckel of Norway earned third place on the day and overall in 1:27.17.

The season's overall runaway winner Mikaela Shiffrin of the United States placed 14th in 1:28.16.

In the men's super-G, Odermatt clinched his 12th win of the season to move onto 1,942 points overall, meaning he needs a top-three finish in his favoured giant slalom on Saturday (March 18) to break the 2,000 recorded by Hermann Maier in 2000.

His latest victory was his sixth from eight races in a discipline he has secured the Crystal Globe in alongside the giant slalom and overall titles.

Odermatt's time of 1:23.90 was too quick for his rivals, beating closest challenger Marco Schwarz of Austria by 0.29 and Norway's Olympic bronze medallist Aleksander Aamodt Kilde by 0.71.

The Swiss star was thrilled with his success in the discipline which he described as "probably the most difficult", and has vowed to treat his next race as he would any other in search of the points record.

"I will treat this race [the giant slalom] like any other race," Odermatt said.

"I will for sure celebrate today a little bit, and then try to go all in again on Saturday for the giant slalom.

"We will see how much is left in the tank.

"If it works, perfect.

"Otherwise, I have won enough."

Yesterday's downhill winner Vincent Kriechmayr of Austria and super-G world champion James Crawford of Canada both did not finish after miscalculations on the course.

Odermatt claimed 740 points for the season in the super-G, with Kilde second on 512 and Kriechmayr third on 335.

The FIS Alpine Ski World Cup Finals is set to continue tomorrow with the team parallel event, followed by the men's giant slalom and women's slalom on Saturday and those two disciplines reversed on Sunday (March 19).
