South Korean An Se-Young won the women’s singles title at the All England Open Badminton Championships, overcoming Olympic singles champion Yu Fei Chen of China in three games.

In the longest of the five finals at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour Super 1000 event, Se-Young claimed the first game 21-17.

Chen bounced back to take the second game 21-10, before a close decider went Se-Young’s way 21-19, as she closed out victory in 75 minutes.

Victory meant Se-Young went one better from her exploits at one of the world’s most famous badminton tournaments last year, when she lost in the final to Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi.

The men’s singles final at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham, England, was an all-Chinese affair, pitting together Shi Feng Li and Yu Qi Shi.

Li edged a tight first game 26-24, before running away with it in the second, which he took 21-5 to seal victory.

It is Li’s second title at a BWF World Tour level event, with his previous victory coming at the 2019 Canada Open, a Super 100 level tournament.

There was a second trophy for China in the mixed doubles final, with top seeds Si Wei Zheng and Ya Qiong Huang beating South Korean duo Seung Jae Seo and Yu Jung Chae 21-16, 16-21, 21-12.

The men’s doubles final was an all-Indonesia affair, with top seeds Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto overcoming compatriots Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan 21-17, 21-14.

Meanwhile the women’s doubles final also featured four players from the same nation, as South Korean pairings did battle.

Sixth seeds So Yeong Kim and Hee Yong Kong ran out comfortable winners over Ha Na Baek and So Hee Lee, winning 21-5, 21-12.
