Malaysia's Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh has given the green light to the country's National Olympic Committee finding a new headquarters.

Yeoh visited the current base for the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) which is situated in a nine-storey building in Kuala Lumpur.

A number of other sporting bodies also use the building which has been deemed as no longer suitable with cramped conditions.

The OCM is now hoping to move to a new site at Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur Sports City.

"We took the opportunity to update Hannah on our plans to relocate, as a follow-up to our proposal which was presented to the Ministry on March 2, 2023," said OCM President Mohamad Norza Bin Zakaria.

"Hannah was given the opportunity to see for herself how the OCM and some of the National Sports Associations operate within Wisma OCM.

"The need to relocate is paramount due to the existing circumstances surrounding the Wisma OCM.

"We have identified a suitable location at Bukit Jalil and we have gone through the request for proposal from potential developers.

"The plan is to construct a sustainable building with green technology, similar to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) headquarters, Olympic House in Lausanne, Switzerland."

In November, Zakaria told IOC President Thomas Bach about his plan to emulate Olympic House.

Yeoh said the current headquarters were no longer "feasible to function effectively".

"I also agree that OCM has to be located at the Kuala Lumpur Sports City," she said.

"We have to look at the long term, 20 years and 30 years from today.

"The Ministry will study the OCM proposal and begin the process of getting the necessary feedback and potential development model.

"Sport requires modernisation and it should start with the infrastructure followed by administration and management."

Malaysia is the country which has won the most Olympic medals without ever striking gold.

The country has claimed eight silvers and five bronzes.
