The display pays tribute to double Pan American Games champion Alberto Larraguibel and his long-standing world record.

In 1949, the Chilean set an equestrian high jump best score of 2.47 metres with his horse Huaso, who was raised at the venue in Quillota. 

"We have the honour to be part of a select group of districts at a national level, and for sure it couldn't be another place for equestrian sports," said Quillota Mayor Óscar Calderón on hosting.

"There is a whole district with great disposal to be one of the most important venues, this is not for defeating someone else, it's just for expressing with a lot of love that you didn't get it wrong when you chose us."

The mural was painted across one of the gym's walls by local artist Javier Leiva and a team of volunteers.

"We're very proud that our art had been considered, we're local painters and what we basically wanted to portray in the mural was what it is to live in Quillota," Leiva, also known as Artoarte, said.

"We also wanted to portray the 'Huaso Jumping' which is the most classic and incomparable that has been done in the world.

"As Quillota, we have that record and there are a lot of people who are proud of it.

"We tried to make it more modern and join that together with what is going to happen during the Pan American Games."

The Pan American Games are due to be celebrated between October 20 and November 5 before the Parapan American Games then take place from November 17 to 26.
