Rwandan teenage sensation Henriette Ishimwe and Bangladeshi veteran Shakib Al Hasan have won the International Cricket Council’s respective women’s and men’s player of the match awards for March.

There are 17 years separating the two award-winning all-rounders after they both produced superb performances with bat and ball last month.

Ishimwe saw off the challenge of Papua New Guinea duo Sibona Jimmy and Ravini Oa to secure the prestigious prize.

At just 19 years old, the Rwandan has played close to 50 T20 internationals for her country as she showcased her talents in March.

Ishimwe excelled in last month’s Nigeria Cricket Federation’s women’s T20 international tournament where she took four wickets against Ghana and five versus Cameroon as well as notching 32 and 43 runs with the bat against the same teams.

"I am humbled and honoured to win this award for my performances in the last month," said Ishimwe.

"I owe this award to the many people who have supported me throughout my journey in cricket.

"To my coaches, who have invested countless hours into my training and development, to my teammates, who have been my source of inspiration and motivation, and to my family and friends, who have always stood by me, and above all, the almighty God, who has made all this possible.

"I look forward to continuing to contribute to the world of cricket and win more matches for my country."

Shakib has secured the men’s player of the month award for the second time after winning it in July 2021.

This time, the 36-year-old beat Kane Williamson of New Zealand and Asif Khan of the United Arab Emirates to walk away with the coveted prize.

Shakib starred in the three-match one-day international (ODI) series against England, finishing as the highest run-scorer and wicket-taker for Bangladesh who recorded a historic 3-0 whitewash.

He also impressed when Ireland visited, scoring a match-winning 93 in the first ODI.

In the 12 games played in March, Al Hasan notched 353 runs and claimed 15 wickets.

"I am honoured to win the award and would like to thank the expert panellists who have voted for me," said Shakib.

"This is a recognition I greatly value because there are so many special performances in a month from a number of amazing cricketers.

"If I was to pick my highlight from the past month, it has to be the T20 series sweep against England and, with the team continuing to perform beautifully as a unit in all departments, it is easier for me now to concentrate on my role and contribute."
