Kwaku Ofosu-Asare, executive chair of the Accra 2023 African Games Organising Committee, has urged the hosts to focus on "other disciplines" and not just concentrate on football.

Ghana is among the many football-crazy African countries.

The senior national team has won the African Cup of Nations four times and has also produced some memorable moments at the FIFA World Cup.

A quarter-final exit at the hands of Uruguay - a match known for the infamous Luis Suarez handball - was the best-ever finish for the men's national team at the quadrennial event.

However, Ofosu-Asare pointed out that failure to win a continental title since 1982 is a sign to shift their focus as the country prepares to host the African Games for the first time.

"We don't have to over-concentrate on football," Ofosu-Asare was quoted as saying by GhanaWeb.

"We have done that for years.

"I mean, we love football, running commentary and travelling with the team but we need to also be looking at other disciplines.

"The African Games is giving us the opportunity to shift focus from football to other disciplines."

The African Games was supposed to be held this year, but has now been postponed and is set to be held from march 8 to 23 next year.

Economic crisis and delays in preparations were among the reasons why the Games was postponed.
