A letter has been sent to the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC), asking it to terminate USA Boxing's membership, insidethegames can exclusively reveal.

The move comes after the National Federation left IBA last month to join newly formed World Boxing.

USA Boxing is the first and only National Federation to officially announce that it is joining the new body, described as a "rogue organisation" by the IBA.

USA Boxing executive director Mike McAtee confirmed in a letter to members of the national governing body the organisation's intent to submit an application to become a member of World Boxing.

"I cannot confirm the development but I don't refute it," an IBA official told insidethegames.

World Boxing was launched last month, with the organisation promising that several members would be announced in May.

The new body is led by an Interim Executive Board comprised of representatives from the National Federations of Germany, Britain, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Sweden, and the United States.

Boris van der Vorst, who is part of the Interim Executive Board, is set to resign as President of the Dutch Boxing Association to devote more time to the new body, as insidethegames exclusively revealed yesterday.

According to section (8.3) of the bylaws of the USOPC, Olympic National Federations will be members of "IFs [International Federations] recognised by the IOC".

"Eligibility for membership as Olympic Sport Organisation will be limited to those amateur sports organisations that are recognised and certified by the corporation as the national governing bodies (NGB) for sports that have competed on the programme of the Olympic Games or competed in medal sports in the immediate past Olympic Games," the bylaw read.

"The term "sports that have competed on the programme" means sports that have been approved by the IOC [International Olympic Committee] to participate as medal sports at an upcoming Olympic Games.

"An Olympic Sport Organisation that has participated in the immediate past Olympic Games is eligible to remain an Olympic Sport Organisation until determined that it is not included on the programme of the next Games.

"Each Olympic Sport Organisation will be identified with a sport included on the programme of the Olympic Games.

"In accordance with the IOC’s Olympic Charter, the corporation will not recognise or certify more than one NGB in each sport.

"Olympic Sport Organisations will be United States members of IFs recognised by the IOC."

The IBA has been suspended by the IOC since 2019, due to concerns over judging and refereeing, financial stability and governance.

It remains to be seen if the USOPC will wait until the IOC reaches a solution with the IBA on recognition, before taking a decision on USA Boxing.

insidethegames has contacted USOPC and USA Boxing for a comment.

The IBA has claimed that an Ad-Hoc Committee has been set up to resolve the long-standing dispute between the two organisations.

At the Men's World Boxing Championships here, IBA's Russian President Umar Kremlev has said that a "collaborative approach" is needed to secure the sport's future at the Olympic Games.

An IOC Boxing Task Force handled the sport at Tokyo 2020 and is set to do so at Paris 2024, although that is not guaranteed due to a row over technical officials.

Boxing remains off the initial programme for Los Angeles 2028 as well.

The IBA Ad-Hoc Committee is represented by secretary general George Yerolimpos, all continental federation Presidents, vice-president Ajay Singh from India and IBA Board of Directors member Jinqiang Zhou, who is also the Deputy Minister of Sport in China.
