Vollering's second triumph on the four-stage race sealed an overall victory by more than two minutes over compatriot Shirin van Anrooij, racing for Trek-Segafredo.

On the stage on Friday (May 19), she had been beaten across the finish line by Team SD Worx team-mate Lorena Wiebes, but Vollering was later declare the winner because was deemed to have impeded Canyon-SRAM rider Chloé Dygert, a two-time track cycling Olympic medallist for the United States.

Wiebes claimed stage wins in bunch sprints on the first and third, giving her an advantage of 14 seconds over Dygert and Vollering in the general classification going into the 121.5 kilometres final stage from Tordómar to Lagunas de Neila.

However, it was Vollering, third in this race last year and who was controversially denied victory on La Vuelta Femenina by her compatriot Annemiek van Vleuten of Movistar Team earlier this month, considered the favourite for the overall win.

Van Anrooij staved off AG Insurance-Soudal-Quick-Step's Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio of South Africa at 1min 40sec off the pace.
