The Santiago Government has launched the Gana Santiago programme as part of the celebrations for this year's Pan American and Parapan American Games in Chile's capital.

The programme seeks to promote sporting culture among residents, with more than 620 initiatives stemming from it including workshops, tournaments, fairs, interventions, bicycle rides, courses, and forums.

With just over 150 days remaining until the beginning of the continental event on October 20, the capital city is readying itself to welcome approximately 9,000 athletes from 41 nations.

"And like every festival, this is a great opportunity and challenge," said Santiago Governor Claudio Orrego.

"We can demonstrate to the world that we’re good hosts, so the more than 9,000 athletes that will come and 100,000 people that will attend have a great experience in Chile.

"We expect them to feel well received, that we help them in everything, for example, having a safer and cleaner city."

More than 50,000 people from the 52 communes of Santiago have taken part so far.

In addition, the main objective of Gana Santiago is to dress the city up for the Games.

"Having sports in prior activities in every district of the Metropolitan Region is an integration message in an important and significant space," said Chile's Sports Minister Jaime Pizarro.

"It's an honour sharing with the athletes, so I wish them as much inspiration as they can have for the Games.

"There are a lot of factors that motivate us and delight us, and we'll live a participation and integration festival."

This year's Pan American Games are set to conclude on November 5 before the Parapan American Games are scheduled for November 17 to 26.
