Russian second seed Daniil Medvedev crashed out in the first round yesterday following his five-set defeat to Brazilian qualifier Thiago Seyboth Wild, but Alcaraz and Djokovic ensued that remained the biggest casualty so far.

Alcaraz did not have it all his own way against Japan’s Taro Daniel but still looked impressive in his second-round triumph.

Daniel won the second set to draw level only for top seed Alcaraz to respond by producing his best tennis as he completed a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

Djokovic courted controversy when he wrote a political message about Kosovo on the courtside camera lens following his first-round success on Monday (May 29).

But the 22-time Grand Slam winner refrained from doing it again after he saw off Hungarian Marton Fucsovics in straight sets.

Fucsovics went toe-to-toe with Djokovic in the opening set before the Serbian found another gear to seal a 7-6, 6-0, 6-3 win.

"I’m very happy with the match, I had a lot of intensity throughout the first set, which was difficult for me," said Djokovic.

"I hope that I amused you, especially in the first set. It wasn’t enjoyable for me, but after it, now I can say, I enjoyed it."

Djokovic is now set to take on Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina who overcame Frenchman Luca Van Assche 6-3, 6-3, 7-6 in the second round.

Greek fifth seed and two-time Grand Slam finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas dispatched Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena 6-3, 7-6, 6-2.

Court Suzanne-Lenglen also witnessed dominant victories for Britain’s Cameron Norrie and Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti.

The two are set to face each other in the third round after Norrie thumped home favourite Lucas Pouille 6-1, 6-3, 6-3 before Musetti crushed Russian Alexander Shevchenko 6-1, 6-1, 6-2.

Other standout second-round matches included stunning five-set victories for Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz and Australia’s Thanasi Kokkinakis.

Hurkacz came from behind to defeat Dutch player Tallon Griekspoor 6-3, 5-7, 6-7, 7-6, 6-4, while Kokkinakis outlasted Switzerland’s 2015 French Open champion Stan Wawrinka 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3.

Fifth seed Caroline Garcia’s hopes of delivering home success are over after her second-round defeat to Russian Anna Blinkova.

Garcia got off to a strong start before coming unstuck against Blinkova who secured a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 win.

American third seed Jessica Pegula won the first set 6-2 against Camila Giorgi before the Italian retired hurt at the start of the second.

Aryna Sabalenka, who is seeded second, saw off Iryna Shymanovich 7-5, 6-2 in an all-Belarusian second-round tie on Court Suzanne-Lenglen.

There were also wins for Ukraine’s Elena Svitolina and American Sloane Stephens.
