A ceremony has been held in South Korea to unveil commemorative coins dedicated to the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Gold and silver coins are set to be distributed in the country in a bid to build excitement for next year's Games.

They are said to symbolise the friendship between France and South Korea across Olympic sport.

The Monnaie de Paris - which produces France's coins - presented the new collection alongside Korean steel company Poongsan Group, which makes blanks for euros.

Monnaie de Paris is an authorised distributor of commemorative coins for Paris 2024 and its chief executive Marc Schwartz attended the presentation ceremony at the French ambassador's residence in Seoul.

He was joined by Poongsan Group President Ryun Jin, while South Korean breaker Kim Heon-woo performed in anticipation of the sport's Olympic debut in Paris.

"These commemorative coins are a precious souvenir of this global event that takes place every four years," said French ambassador Philippe Lefort, according to Yonhap.

The collection includes a gold coin engraved with the Palace of Versailles and a different set of three gold coins which are based on French heritage.

A set of silver coins represents five sports which will appear at the Olympics, including breaking.

There are also gold and silver coins featuring the Paris 2024 Olympic mascot, Phryge the Phrygian cap.

Pre-orders of the coins have begun on the Hwadong website and will close on June 23.

"Competition will take place not only in the stadiums but also in the heart of the city," said Schwartz to Yonhap

"And that's why the series celebrates the most iconic places in the French capital."
