The Virtus Global Games acted as the first event of the Paris 2024 Paralympics qualification programme in table tennis.

Competition has been taking place across 13 sports at the multi-sport event for athletes with intellectual impairments in Vichy, France.

As well as table tennis, action has also been taking place in tennis, taekwondo, karate, judo, handball, futsal, horse riding, cycling, basketball, rowing, swimming and athletics, across intellectual disability (II1), intellectual disability and addition impairment (II2), and autism eligibility group (II3) categories.

Winning athletes in the men’s and women’s singles table tennis tournaments secured their Paris 2024 spots, with Jean Bachevillier victorious in the men’s IL2.

There was more French success in the women’s IL2 with Lucile Poquet taking gold.

In the IL3 singles category France’s Pierre Delhom won the men’s event, while in the women’s IL3 the only athlete entered was Maud Pinchon, also of France.

Chen Po-Yen of Chinese Taipei took victory in the IL1 category.

Judo made its debut appearance at the Virtus Global Games, with competition held at CREPS Double Hall.

Among the winners were Britain’s Joshua Hodkinson, who beat compatriot Tom Mawdsley to win the men’s under-66 kilograms category.

There was home gold for France’s Antonin Valmy, who secured victory in the men’s under-60kg as he beat Croatia’s Josip Krznaric by ippon.

There was more home success in the men’s under-81kg IL1 category as Ifeanyi Oguejiofor cruised through his bouts, winning them all by ippon, including the final against Robert Girdwood of Australia.

Karate also made its debut at the Games, with Spain winning two of the four golds across the categories contested.

In the women’s K21 Lucia Rosado Sanchez took gold, defeating Olivia Kakosy of Hungary, who was forced to settle for silver.

The women’s K22 category saw Natalie Olson of Canada take victory, as she defeated Andrea Maria Matari Perez of Spain.

Spain took the men’s K21 title, with Carlos Ruiz Huertas securing gold by overcoming Albert Singer of Germany.

Finally in the men’s K22 Mattia Allesina of Italy took the title, winning a first gold medal for the country by beating Manuel Victor Prieto Arevalo of Spain.

Australia impressed in Para-dressage competition, the first live equestrian tournament for Virtus in five years.

Sui Watts took the IL2 title with a score of 62.241 per cent, with Andrew Driffield winning the IL1 category with a score of 71.437 per cent.

Australia also took team gold thanks to Driffield, Watts and Sarah Sherwood with 1,459.5 points.
