Irranca-Davies, who represents the Ogmore constituency, has revealed that his enthusiasm was inspired by local clubs, including the Blandy-Jenkins Archers.

"They are a credit to the local community," he said.

"And through these clubs I've seen the ability of archery first hand to contribute to the well-being of communities, and the self-esteem and confidence of individuals.

"During my fellowship I intend to work with grass-roots development, with the many volunteers who sustain archery in the clubs throughout the UK, and to see some of the work of our top archers – Olympians and Paralympians - in advance of the 2012 Olympics, and their support teams."

The Parliamentary Sports Fellowship was set up in 2005, and aims to build a better understanding of sport within Parliament, and a stronger partnership between the worlds of sport and politics.

Parliamentarians are matched to a sport and are invited to spend at least seven days with the governing body to gain an insider's view on the work they do.

In return, employees from the governing body spend three days shadowing the Parliamentarian to gain a better understanding of how Parliament works and identify opportunities to work with MPs and peers.
