Teams from 10 sports, including wheelchair tennis, archery and sitting volleyball, will attend the camp in readiness for London 2012 – and all athletes will be encouraged to live a "greener" lifestyle, in terms of producing lower carbon emissions, when training, competing and travelling as well as when they're at home by recycling waste (pictured top) and reducing water usage.

Last year EDF Energy's support saw ParalympicsGB's London 2012 simulation camp become the first multi-day sporting event in the world to be accredited – with a silver certification – by the Council for Responsible Sport.

Taking on board their learnings from 2011, the two organisations will now be hoping to strike gold at this year's camp, which will be held at the University of Bath from August 18 to September 2.

Toby Radcliffe, a professional long-course triathlete and sustainability expert, will be working alongside the BPA and EDF Energy to impart his knowledge at the camp.

To add a dash of fun to proceedings, a photography competition will invite athletes to depict sustainability by submitting images under the theme of My Perfect World; the photos will be published on social media channels allowing viewers to vote for their favourites.

EDF Energy has also developed a sustainability education programme for the team members and support staff while at the camp with everyday energy efficiency advice provided in welcome packs and daily newsletters.

Ellie Simmonds, the double Paralympic gold medal-winning swimmer from Beijing 2008, attended last year's camp and is backing the drive to make ParalympicsGB a leader in sustainability as well as sport.

"Having such a strong focus on sustainability at the preparation camp definitely encourages us to think about what we can do to help the environment," she said.

"We're all really competitive and will do whatever we can to be the greenest team possible."

Tim Hollingsworth, chief executive of the BPA, said: "ParalympicsGB is dedicated to being the best it can be, and that extends from the field of play to becoming a sustainable team.

"This year we are going for gold on both counts."

Gareth Wynn, EDF director, 2012 programme, echoed this: "We are right behind ParalympicsGB in their quest for gold on and off the field of play in 2012."
