The 22-year-old from Lothersdale, who won gold in Beijing in 2008 with victory in the open individual compound, finished second in the women’s compound match behind Nicky Hunt to claim a place in the England team for the Commonwealth Games following a two-day selection shoot held over the weekend at the Meriden Archery Club near Coventry.

Brown, who took up archery at the age of 15, is widely tipped to be one of the stars of the London 2012 and in addition to her medal in Beijing, she has won gold in the compound at the last two International Paralympic Committee (IPC) World Championships for archers with a disability.

She suffers from reflex sympathetic dystrophy which affects her ability to stand due to chronic pain in her feet, so she shoots propped on a stool.

Brown took up archery because of her fascination with movies such as Lord of the Rings, in which archery features.

She said: "I am really happy.

"I did not think that I would even make it as far as this weekend’s qualifying event so to be selected for the Commonwealth Games team is fantastic."

Brown will now join up with a 12-person archery team for Delhi which features and 2004 Olympic bronze medallist Alison Williamson.

Williamson, who has competed at four Olympic Games, won the women’s recurve match to qualify for Delhi alongside Amy Oliver and Naomi Folkard who came second and third respectively.

Williamson said: "It is a great opportunity for me to go to a Commonwealth Games as an archer.

"I am looking forward to competing in Delhi and being part of the England Team."

Barcelona 1992 Olympic bronze medallist Simon Terry (pictured) comfortably won the men’s recurve match and will compete in Delhi alongside Larry Godfrey and Alan Wills.

The men’s compound team for Delhi will comprise of Liam Grimwood, Chris White and Duncan Busby.

The women’s compound team will see Nicola Simpson join Hunt and Brown in the Indian capital.

For the compound archers, the Commonwealth Games is very much the pinnacle of their participation at a multi-sport event as only recurve archers compete at the Olympics.

Following the two day selection shoot, England Commonwealth Games Chef de Mission Craig Hunter said: "I am delighted to welcome the archers to the English Commonwealth Games team and I wish them every success in Delhi.

"The selection of Danielle Brown is an historic moment as she will become the first Paralympian to represent England in an able bodied event at the Games."

Archery will be making its first appearance at the Commonwealth Games since the Brisbane 1982 Games when only two medals were contested.
