London 2012_Closing_Ceremony_Paralympics_September_9_2012September 28 - More than one in four British businesses believe that the successful delivery of London 2012 will help provide an export boost to host countries of future major events, such as Brazil, host of the next FIFA World Cup and Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games.

This is one key finding of new research by Deloitte, a leading professional services firm and London 2012 sponsor, into the attitudes of UK businesses towards legacy opportunities arising from the London Games (pictured top, Olympic Stadium).

Publication of the research coincides with a trade mission to Brazil led by David Cameron, the British Prime Minister, and including a dozens-strong British business delegation.

The research also found that half of British businesses felt the Games had increased confidence in the ability of British companies to deliver large infrastructure projects.

Just over a third of those surveyed thought, meanwhile, that there would be long-term improvements in the programme management of infrastructure projects in the UK.

"The British construction industry has enjoyed a massive reputational boost as a result of the skill and efficiency with which the vast Olympic programme was put together," said Steve Almond, a Deloitte managing partner, who is with the delegation to Brazil.

Just over a quarter of companies suffered disruption due to staff unavailability through sickness or holiday during London 2012, with about one in five experiencing transport issues.

At the same time, 26 per cent of companies said they suffered no disruption at all during the Games.

The research suggested that the business legacy of London 2012 might include a longer-term reassessment of flexible working, with almost a third of companies intending to make greater use of flexible hours and 16 per cent to allow more employees to work from home.
