BMX Supercross World Cup Manchester 2013June 21 - Manchester will host the opening round of the International Cycling Union (UCI) BMX Supercross World Cup next year as Berlin joins the circuit for the first time, it was announced today.

It will be the second time that Manchester has hosted the Supercross World Cup, where British riders Shanaze Reade and Liam Phillips were victorious earlier this year.

The UCI BMX Supercross World Cup is due to take place from 18 to 19 April, 2014, at the National Cycling Centre's BMX track, one of the only indoor purpose built facilities in Europe.

"I'm delighted that the BMX Supercross World Cup is coming to Manchester for the second year in a row," said Jonny Clay, British Cycling's Director for Cyclesport and Membership.

"This year's event was a massive success and proved that Supercross is an exciting sport that can really draw the crowds.

"We look forward to building on this for next year's event which we hope will be our biggest yet."

The 2014 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup in Manchester is part of UK Sport's £27 million ($42 million/€32 million) National Lottery funded Gold Event Series which aims to bring 70 major championships to Britain to build on the success of London 2012.

"Securing a second UCI BMX World Cup for Manchester's new facility demonstrates that one year on the major events legacy is still going strong," said Simon Morton, UK Sport's Director of Major Events and International Relations.

"The Gold Event Series now features more than 20 events ensuring that the UK remains one of the world leading event hosting nations."

The calendar, subject to approval by the UCI Management Committee, also includes rounds at four other destinations: Papendal in the Netherlands, Santiago del Estero in Argentina and Chula Vista in the United States, as well as Berlin.

The Berlin event will be held in Mellowpark, a well-known spot for action sports of all kinds, which has recently hosted a string of successful high-profile BMX events.

The third round in the German capital on June 13 and 14 will mark the half-way stage of the 2014 World Cup and the last round before the UCI BMX World Championships in Rotterdam on July 23 until 27.
