BMW will continue its partnership of the BMW Championship up until 2019 ©Getty Images German car giant BMW has agreed a five-year deal with the United States PGA Tour and the Western Golf Association (WGA) which will see it continue as title sponsor of the FedEx Cup Playoff event, the BMW Championship.

The announcement of this latest deal comes following the recent agreement with The European Tour, which will see the firm continue as title sponsorship of the BMW International Open in Germany, the BMW Masters in China, and the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth through until 2018.

The agreement with the PGA Tour runs until 2019 and continues the car manufacturer's sponsorship of the BMW Championship, which began in 2007.

The BMW Championship was named the PGA Tour's Tournament of the Year in 2012 and 2013.

All net proceeds from the Championship conducted by the WGA benefit the Evans Scholars Foundation, which grants full college scholarships to young caddies.

Since BMW became title sponsor in 2007, the tournament has contributed more than $16 million (£9.6 million/€11.7million) to the Evans Scholars Foundation.

"BMW has gone above and beyond our expectations as a partner in the ongoing support of our Evans Scholars Programme," said WGA President and chief executive John Kaczkowski.

"Thanks to BMW's generosity, we've been able to send many more deserving golf caddies to college.

"We're committed to working with BMW in the years ahead to add to the BMW Championship's reputation as a leader on the PGA Tour."

American Zach Johnson won the tournament at Conway Farms Golf Club in Illinois last year, while this year's event will be held at the Cherry Hills Country Club in Denver, Colorado from September 4 to 7.

The FedEx Cup Playoff format was also introduced in 2007 and the BMW Championship is the third of four tournaments in the end-of-season series, which begins with The Barclays Championship, followed by the Deutsche Bank Championship and ending with the Tour Championship.

Throughout the year, players earn points to qualify for the FedEx Cup Playoffs, which sees the top 125 players qualify for the first event - The Barclays - before the field is narrowed after each event, culminating in the FedEx Cup champion being crowned after the Tour Championship in late September.

The winner of the FedEx Cup series earns around $10 million (£6 million/€7.4 million) of an overall prize fund of around $35 million (£21 million/€28 million).

Sweden's Henrik Stenson was crowned the FedEx Cup champion in 2013.
