It will be the third USGA tournament to be held at the venue following the 1986 US Amateur and the 2008 US Junior Amateur.

The venues also played host to the 1984 and 1990 Professional Golfers' Association Championships

Shoal Creek is located near Birmingham, Alabama, with the tournament set to be held from May 31 to June 3, 2018.

"Shoal Creek has a great track record as a championship site and the USGA is quite pleased to partner with the club for a US Women's Open," US Golf Association vice-president Daniel B Burton said.

"We regard Shoal Creek as a wonderful test of golf and are confident it will again shine as a competitive venue for a USGA national championship."

During the announcement, USGA also revealed that, beginning in 2018, the US Women's Open will be moved to before the men's US Open.

"Conducting the US Women's Open earlier in the year will allow the USGA to provide optimum playing conditions for the world's best players across a broader variety of the country's finest golf courses," added Burton.

The US Women's Open has been held prior to the US Open only three times in its 69-year history, in 1996, 1999 and 2001.

The tournament is one of five major championships on the Ladies Professional Golf Association, the dominant tour in women's golf.

This year's US Women's Open is scheduled for June 19 until 22 at Pinehurst, North Carolina - the week after venue hosts the US Open, the second men's major of the season.

Shoal Creek opened in November 1977 after being designed by golfing legend Jack Nicklaus.

It has also hosted the Regions Tradition, one of the five Champions Tour majors, since 2011.
