SPORTEL general manager Amparo Di Fede has hailed the impact of the recent convention in Monaco, which saw a 24 per cent increase in participating new companies compared with the previous year.

This month's event in Monte Carlo, held from October 12 to 15, was attended by a total of 2,786 people representing 994 businesses and companies from 75 countries.

It allowed for some of the sports media rights industry’s most important figureheads to network and discuss business plans and Di Fede was delighted with how the convention had gone.

“The result is overwhelming and we are thankful for the trust and loyalty of the SPORTEL community,” she said.

“Our team has worked hard on developing more business opportunities across the media industry.

“One of the major aspects we worked on is solutions for marketing, brand-communication and the implementation of technology that helps content dealers reach their objectives, offering interesting media packages that enable brands and broadcasters a real interaction with audiences.

“SPORTEL is not a sole rights market anymore, it’s evolving to an all-round sports marketing and media convention that provides a huge variety of business opportunities and connections for the industry.”

A host of top sporting names were in attendance at the convention at the Grimaldi Forum, including five-times world boxing champion Evander Holyfield, former FIFA Player of the Year Luis Figo and Olympic high jumping gold medallist Tia Hellebaut.

The inaugural TV Sports Awards, co-hosted by charity Play for Change, were held on the opening night and saw media professionals rewarded for their work, with the ceremony also attracting several stellar names including World Cup winner Fabio Cannavaro and former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand.

The annual SPORTEL Awards also took place at the convention and a number of key events were held, including boules officially launching their bid for inclusion at the 2024 Olympic Games and the International Basketball Federation giving more details on their changed competition calendar, which comes into effect from November 2017.

The next edition of SPORTEL will be held in Singapore from March 15 to 17 before it returns to its home in Monaco from October 24 to 27.
